Water and Pearls | Creative Portrait Photography Orlando
Some people walk into a session already knowing exactly who they are. That energy is something you cannot manufacture and when you have it in front of your lens, your only job is to get out of the way and capture it.
That is what this session was. Dramatic. Intentional. Full of contrast between soft pearls and bold ink, delicate lace and a wall of backlit water that filled the entire frame.
We started with the profile. That side angle with the water misting behind her is one of those shots where the timing has to be right and the light has to be right at the same exact moment. We hit that backlight and every single water droplet lit up against the dark background. It feels like she is standing inside a storm that is completely under her control.
Then we brought her face front and center. This is where you really see everything that makes this session work. The bindi, the septum ring, the colorful traditional tattoos, the rings stacked on every finger. None of it was an accident. Every detail in this frame was chosen and it shows. The optical spot is doing its job here, carving light across her face, her makeup, the lace, and every pearl in that layered jewelry.
The third frame is my favorite from the set. She is facing the camera straight on, both hands framing her face, draped pearl chains falling across her chest, and that column of backlit water cutting through behind her. Everything in this image pulls your eye right back to her face. That is the goal every single time.
How I shot this session
The water element is all about backlighting. We sprayed water behind the subject and positioned a Westcott FJ250 with its reflector dish directly behind her. That light catches every droplet and makes them read as bright specular highlights against the dark seamless. The darker your background the more dramatic that effect gets.
Main light was a Westcott FJ400II camera left with the Lindsay Adler Optical Spot attached and the spot gobo in place. That combo gives you a controlled focused beam that sculpts exactly what you want it to sculpt. In these frames you can see it working on her face, her makeup, the lace dress, and every pearl in that layered jewelry. Nothing spilling where it does not belong.
